9 Simple Steps on How to Sew a Dog Bandana

December 20, 2021

Are you tired of buying commercialized dog bandanas with generic designs?

Do you want to challenge your creativity and sew a personalized dog bandana for your dog?

This quick and straightforward manual should help you sew a DIY dog bandana by yourself.

Why use a dog bandana?

Dog bandanas are another way to show off your pup’s uniqueness through fashion. You can give your adorable furbaby a dog bandana with a design that compliments their personality.

There are practical uses for this, too, of course.

A dog bandana will protect your precious pooch from the dangers that come with the fickleness of the weather. A dog with little-to-none or light-colored hair will appreciate the extra layer of cloth that shields them from the penetrating heat of the sun.

Another practical usage for a dog bandana is that it signifies to others the need to give your puppy special treatment when applicable. To be specific, you can put a statement on the dog bandana stating that your dog gets easily anxious or aggressive when approached aggressively.

Lastly, a dog bandana can help you locate your puppy, especially in the dark. It’s easier to spot your dog amongst the sea of canines in a dog park when they’re wearing a bright red bandana around their neck.

Resources needed to sew a personalized dog bandana

  • Fabric that your Fido is comfortable with
  • Ribbon
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Thread & needle
  • Sewing pins/clips
  • Scissors
  • Safety pins

Take note that the amount of fabric you need depends on the size of your canine. Just make sure that the bandana won’t hinder your dog’s movements when they finally wear the final product.

Steps to sew a DIY bandana

  1. Cut the fabric into a square in a size that’s proportional to your puppy’s neck. The design of the cloth is up to you.
  2. Fold the cut fabric diagonally to give it a triangular shape. Make sure that the side with no design is the one that’s showing and that all the edges are perfectly parallel to each other by pinning or clipping them into place.
  3. Sew a seam of around ¼ inches to cover the edges of the triangular fabric. Make sure to leave a 1-inch hole on the left and right ends as an entryway for the ribbon, as well as space to turn the material inside out. Afterward, you can now remove the pins or clips that hold the edges in place.
  4. Turn the fabric inside out by utilizing the holes you made earlier. Pick one hole and start pushing the rest of the fabric into it. You can use a pointed object to help you if you want.
  5. Now that you’ve done the step above, cut the ribbon depending on your furry friend’s size and insert it through the holes of the triangular fabric. Make sure that the ribbon is long enough to dangle on both ends and that it’s held in place by pins or clips.
  6. Go back to the edges of the fabric and topstitch them down from one side and up to the other. Make sure to close the remaining holes of the fabric by doing so.
  7. As for the ribbon on hand, fold its ends twice and sew down the inner edge to keep it from fraying.
  8. Add any additional decorations you want.
  9. Cut any loose threads that you see, and the bandana is now good to go!
